mascara runs
Does anybody else have a strict no-mascara policy on nights when crying, out, is a very real possibility? My lashes have been looking pretty wimpy this week. Probably a sign that some things aren’t going so well.

I had kind of a rough day and was in a bad mood. I decided to try on my costume and I immediately felt tons better. I sure wish there were more frequent excuses to don my beloved cow costume.

Taken a couple years back, on a bike ride in western North Carolina. A few moments later, the cows came to the edge of the field to look at us. Nothing better. And yeah, my eyes are pretty much always closed.

Tater Tots for Two: It's a Date!
Oh my gosh, two of my favorite things are featured in a cute New York Times article: Restaurants and dates, does it get any better? Oh, to live in New York and have such options. (The Atlanta restaurant scene is pretty cool, actually, and the list of restaurants where I’d like to go, ideally with a boy, is a lot longer than the list of boys who might not mind taking me out.) I’m crazy...

Chelsea and Tec
Image from design*sponge. Officially in love with Chelsea and Tec Petaja. She’s an art teacher (at a Montessori school!) slash-artist, he’s a wedding photographer. They’re kind of perfect, and of course their home, featured today on design*sponge, is too. I really love the framed scrabble photo. Chelsea also found a guy that carves four and six inch Scrabble tiles. Kind of a...

holga cow
cow tuesday number 8 by plasticfantastic. Embarrassing confession number 294,384: I love Holgas. I want one, I dream about them (quite literally; I had a really great Holga dream a couple of weeks back), I think they are amazing. So here’s a great photo of a cow, taken with a Holga. What a cutie pie.

Consider yourselves lucky. Today’s picture of the day was almost of my toes, most particularly my second toe on the right foot which is currently blue, Ah, running. Ah, blood blisters. Midway through my run, a pretty awful pain set in in my left hamstring. I toughed it out for six miles and then decided to celebrate my completion of a big first draft with a visit to QuikTrip for a freezoni....

owl city: the bird and the worm
I’m not big into posting lyrics, but these are just so perfect to me. If I’m your boy, let’s take a short cut we remember And we’ll enjoy picking apples in late September Like we’ve done for years Then we’ll take a long walk through the corn field And I’ll kiss you between the ears You and I left our troubles far behind, troubles far behind But I still...

2 cows 1 Polaroid
2 cows 1 Polaroid by lagwd. I always feel a little conflicted about liking Polaroids. I think aesthetically they can be really great, but I think there are also people just taking Polaroids and calling them art, without much reason or actual artistry. But I thought I’d feature a cow Polaroid or two. So here we go. Also, the name on this one is really cheeky and it kind of cracks me up.

A friend today gave me some good advice, said that I shouldn’t feel weird or embarrassed about music I like. So I’m going to try to stop, and to that end tell y’all that today I fell in love with Owl City. (Sounds sort of just like Postal Service, but still amazing.) Here’s a link to a YouTube playlist of Owl City’s newest cd, Ocean Eyes. And, um, he’s gorgeous....

"When Members Run Afoul of the Park Slope Co-Op"
Amusing article in the New York Times about the Park Slope Co-Op, and members that fail to meet their work requirements. On the co-op: And there are more subtle benefits to being part of such a community. “I’m seeking the olive packaging boy that was laughing at my jokes and wearing plaid pants,” said a Craigslist “Missed Connections” item last winter. “I was wearing the leopard print glasses and...

My book pile is kind of taunting me. I’ve been reading the one in the middle, The Bridge on the Drina, for ever. I’m not crazy about it. I’m dying to read the big book on the bottom, the Cairo Trilogy, but I’d hate to officially give up on Ivo Andric. Hmm. To read a novel requires a certain amount of concentration, focus, devotion to the reading. If you read a novel in...

Picked up a couple of collections of poetry at the library. It’s sort of easier to read a few poems than a chapter of literature between classes or before bed. Poetry isn’t my favorite thing in the world, but Wisława Szymborska’s work is pretty great.

How’s this for a cow-of-the-day picture? Yours truly with the cutest calf last fall at Dakin Dairy Farm in Myakka City. So adorable. 'A Moo-Moo Here, and Better Test Scores Later'
On the bus ride to the farm, the children sang rounds of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” and a boy yelled, “I love pumpkin pie!” But it soon became clear that this was a field “study”— as the teachers called it — not a field “trip,” and the 75 Harlem kindergartners were going not only for a glimpse of rural life, but to rack up extra points on standardized tests. New York State’s English and math...

on sweetness and love.
Mars has many nicknames for me. I love it when he chooses one of his many sweet synonyms for my real name and just throws it into conversation, as if they were my real identity, fact not fiction. Say something often enough to a person and they may begin to believe it, I’ve heard, but I still can’t believe it. I am his angel, he affectionately tells me. And then he slips on a gold necklace to...

I said brr, it's cold in here
My first freeze watch. An unseasonably cold high pressure system will settle across north Georgia early Monday… bringing the coldest temperatures so far this fall to the region. Clear skies and calm winds will allow temperatures to fall into the 28 to 32 degree range for many… but not all locations in the watch area. Jeez louise.

Went out to lunch with a friend, and we got caught in bad traffic on the way home. The roads were blocked for a nearby high school’s homecoming parade. My friend had to proctor an exam so I got out and walked. I stopped and waved and took pictures. It was pretty fun. I had seen the marching band practicing a few days earlier when I was running, so it was neat to see them on the big day.
